Your Resumes Paper is Paper - Or Is It Theres not a day that passes that I dont see at least a couple of articles packed with tips on resumes. Of course, the content, layout, and structure are important. After all, youre trying to dazzle the HR screener enough to get an interview. But how many times have you thought about the paper? Most of the time, about the only consideration given is paper color. And thats in response to the print shops asking you about it. Seldom do we stop to consider whether or how much difference the paper quality might make. Yet we all know there IS a big difference. Remember all those times when you used a cheap grade of paper? The printing might have shown through the backside of the page. Or it jammed in the printer. Or the paper just felt like something you might find a grade school child coloring on. Some of the downsides might be annoyances for you. But some might be enough of a negative impression on the reader that your resume gets the short round file. Choosing Good Paper Asked to evaluate Boise Polaris Premium paper, I decided to compare their Polaris Premium Laser Paper to what I normally stock in my laser printer. Sheepish admission: I am an admitted frugal shopper and sometimes trade quality for economy. My brand was the store-branded laser paper from a local office supply store. For you other frugal shoppers out there, through March 31, Boise is running a great deal on all their premium paper at Office Depot and OfficeDepot.com, just $6.00 per ream. Thats a great value compared to the other major brands, Hammermill Premium and HP Ultra White, which are $12.99 and $9.99 respectively. For the moment, on to the test at hand. Not surprisingly, the Boise paper was superior on all the important measures. For a resume, it would be a perfect choice. Surprisingly, it wasnt just a little better, it was a LOT better. When I printed out a copy of my own resume on each type of paper, I was pretty amazed by how much side-by-side difference there was. In both feel and appearance. Ok, so youre not going to put as much care into choosing a paper as you might the purchase of a new car. That doesnt mean you shouldnt give it any thought at all. Here are the things youll want to consider. Use. The economy paper might be fine for printing off emails and such, but for your resume, youll want high quality. Opacity. This refers to how thin, or sheer, the paper is. A higher rating is less transparent, and lends itself to the quality look you want on your resume. Weight. Twenty pound paper is good for everyday printing. When youre choosing a resume paper, go for 24 pound. Brightness. Brightness measures how reflective the paper is. The more reflective, the more crisp the printing will appear and it will seem to pop off the page. For a resume, a 97 or 98 should do fine. Paper Nightmares We all have our stories of the print job that went very wrong. I think mine has to be a large corporate print I once did, something on the order of a 400 page hard copy training and operations manual. There were a ridiculous number of print fails halfway through the job due to jammed pages and pages that tried to feed six sheets at a time. I tossed the cheap bulk paper and got the job done first time with some good quality paper. Whats your paper printing nightmare? Fighting the January blues with a trip to London Planning a brief adventure in the United Kingdom? From Broadway shows, to fantastic architecture, to the modern attractions, whats a better way to spend your time than sightseeing in one of the most glamorous cities in the world, London. Heres my experience. We Arrived in Soho later than expected. I thought it would be nice to with a distant relative of mine, but my sister didnt want to inconvenience anyone. Oh, well! There went some of my pocket money. The weather this January was said to be cold, so we browsed Hotel Direct and found a place right by Noel street with a great shopping area nearby. I was surprised at how clean the hotel was. Thankfully, they offer the two facilities I cant live without internet access and laundry. When Im in a new place, I wake up a little bit earlier than usual, about 6:45AM. I prepare breakfast at this time and my tummy was starting to gurgle, so we went for a walk heading east until we found a coffee shop. While looking out the opposite side of the street, we saw an array of Caribbean Style restaurants and decided to check them out later since most of them open at 8AM. It wasnât long until we reached Soho Square, where we decided to snap a few photos of ourselves enjoying our takeout. A few locals kindly directed us to the ever famous British Museum. They said it would take about ten minutes by foot, so we decided to walk from the park. Of course, we did not miss it on Great Russell Street. They say this is one of the worlds oldest museums. Its so impressive, and entrance is surprisingly free. The food shops inside were a little expensive, but we didnât mind too much. We were on vacation, after all. Conscientiously, we did also leave a few dollars in the museumâs donation box. The exterior was of the classic Roman architectural style and it was huge. It housed the Rosetta Stone, Egyptian mummies, and other relics. They also had a wide collection of artifacts from all around Asia and Europe. The displays were quite grand, some of which are more than seven meters tall. A few hours wasnt enough to take it all in. On our way back to the hotel, we passed by some tasty-looking vegetarian restaurants, Maoz and Govindas. Iâm not a strict vegetarian. I prefer steaks, wine, and more hearty meals for dinner, but a lighter vegetarian lunch is a great way to go. Speaking of food, on our last night, we wanted to try some fine dining. We decided to try something exotic, so we went to LEscargot on Greek Street to try the snails. On the menu, they highlighted the two popular starters. I had to choose between the escargot and the oysters. My mouth was salivating for oysters, but I decided to stick to the original plan of snails cooked with garlic butter and parsley. I actually enjoyed it. For the main course, I ordered the Roast Veal Chop à la Forestière. The food and the ambiance were perfect, except for my pronunciation of some of the menu item. I clearly remembered my sister having a laughing fit at my less than impeccable French. The next morning, we packed our bags half heartedly. In two and a half days, I still felt like I hadnt explored much of this city yet. Overall, my trip to London was exquisite. If I had had more time and money to spend, I would have definitely added a few more days to my trip.

Questions to Ask When Writing a ResumeWondering what questions to ask when writing a resume? When looking at a resume you may have some very basic thoughts of what the resume is for. This means you know what your interests are, what you are good at, and what you enjoy doing. But what if you have other questions that you want answered?The first question to ask when writing a resume is: What is your best quality? Do you like how you look? Do you have an important job that you love? Do you think your skills and experiences make you a good candidate for a position? Your best quality will be part of your sales pitch.The best way to talk about this is that you may be applying for a job in a field or in a department that you are not good at. A better way to write it is that you may have an ideal candidate for the job but the person currently in the job has left and there is a huge need for someone who knows what they are doing. You can then relay this to your interviewer and begin to talk a bout the ideal candidate you are looking for.Be honest about your strengths and weaknesses and see if there is any room for growth on your short list. This means you have weaknesses that you think you can improve on and you are willing to admit them. If you do this you will probably come out of the interview with an offer of employment. However, don't put it on the resume.You should never put the one thing on your resume that will define you. So if you have never held a leadership position in the past, and you describe yourself as a hard worker and honest and hard working, you should also mention that. This will allow you to leave the impression of a motivated and organized worker who will fit into any organization. Be prepared to provide information about the years in which you worked towards this goal.One other point to consider if the company needs to see your references, and you are hesitant to provide them, is to explain how you have done the research. If they request a referen ce for a particular department, you could suggest something as simple as going to the company website or the contact page to see if they have a contact. This is a way to let them know that you actually went to the effort of looking for a particular person.Remember, the prospective employer is interested in hearing how you think and how you would bring out the best in a job. Make sure that you find the right balance between these two areas. For example, if you are talking about the skills you bring to the table, it makes sense to talk about the projects you have done in the past to highlight this.Another idea is to offer to answer the interviewer's questions or to provide them with details or to bring in someone who can give you more information to back up your claims. This is the line of questioning that the interviewer has the most power over and it gives them leverage when you do not feel comfortable answering it.
